One month after surgery

Treatment
Even though Jim had been tested for C-diff, his diarrhea never stopped. He was eating and drinking. He was keeping everything down and actually felt pretty good. The only real problem was the severe diarrhea. He went to his primary doctor which did another stool sample because he still thought he may have C-diff. Jim was healing and feeling well from the surgery, just the darn diarrhea. If Jim didn't have that, then he would be doing actually pretty well. The lab work came back and again everything was negative. His primary doctor ordered Jim to have a colonoscopy to see what was going on. Jim had never had one and was actually going to ask his doctor to order one this year. So a colonoscopy was ordered for the next week. Someone cancelled their appointment, so we actually had it done four days early.

As they were wheeling Jim to the back, I again gave his a kiss and told him that I loved him. There is something unsettling about having your loved one being wheeled away knowing they are going under, even with a normal procedure. It is just a little scary. So he had the colonoscopy done and was pretty awake when I met him in recovery. The first thing he told me was that he woke up during the procedure. I was shocked!! I have had two colonoscopies done due to colon cancer in the family and I had never woke up during one. Jim told me that he heard the doctor say, "Uh oh." which is never good when you hear it. I just looked at Jim and then he told me that he had to have another surgery. I just sat there in complete shock. Then the doctor came in. He explained to me that there was a hole in Jim's bladder and colon. He had gotten nicked during surgery. The urine was going into Jim's colon and then leaving his body through the rectum. The only way to fix it is to have another surgery. So the whole time we thought he had diarrhea, it was actually urine. So trying to keep him hydrated by drinking everything under the sun surely didn't help the situation.

After the doctor left us, the tears just started coming. I don't really know why it was so upsetting. I guess maybe because Jim was going to have to have another surgery. I really don't know. I just could not keep the tears from stopping. My poor husband had just had a major surgery to remove his prostate, and now had to have another surgery to close the hole that should have never happened. What else did we need to go through??
