I'm Dog Tired

Healing
But, I am about to do something about it.

I will admit that my recent travel schedule and the lingering side effects of treatment have given me cause to “hit the wall” with more momentum and impact than usual. However, if it is true what some say about stress reduction and its positive effects on cancer patients, I am soon to get an extra-strength prescription. I am taking off for a few days to head for a family wedding in Cancun. (I must thank my niece Rachael and her fiance’ Martin for thoughtfully timing their special day for when I need a break the most!)

To make the vacation treatment as effective as possible, I will be taking a short break from posting to this blog. In the meanwhile, don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail if you need to reach me. I will answer your mail when I return!

As I focus on packing my bag this afternoon, I am pleased to say that we will be starting our respite on a high note. I am returning today from New York where yesterday, PCF held its Board meeting at Columbia University and its annual New York fundraising dinner. Both were extremely encouraging for patients and their families.

At Columbia, PCF-funded researchers provided updates on their projects, demonstrating that innovation and progress are still going strong. As a PCF team member, I was impressed by the presentations. As a patient who might someday be needing new treatments, I was buoyed by their creative and integrated approaches. Later in the day, PCF’s dinner was an unqualified success. Thanks to the generosity of our donors who attended the event, we procured pledges to forward the careers and innovative ideas of several new Young Investigators who will soon join the 51 YIs we are already supporting. Additionally, proceeds for the events will also enable us to fund other programs such as our Creativity and Challenge Awards. The evening’s entertainment, featuring Lionel Richie and America, ensured that everyone left the event on a high note.

Yesterday’s events left me feeling emotionally renewed and with a heightened belief that if one has to be living with cancer, these are the times for it. Going back to one of my earliest posts, progress feels good. It’s a perfect way to start a few days off.

Now, pass that margarita, please… Adios y buen salud!
