In the Beginning

Diagnosis
My husband Jim has been dealing with a fluctuating PSA level for about a year. His doctor put him on anti-biotics in case of infection. After the PSA level did not drop, his doctor told him he needed to have a biopsy to rule out cancer. Now, my husband is 55 years old and we weren't too worried. No family history, no one we even knew had prostate cancer. He went to the appointment on June 1st, 2010 and the DRE was fine, no lumps or bumps. The ultrasound that his urologist did came back clean, he could not detect anything. So we just had to wait for the biopsy results. During this week of waiting, we were a little scared, but since nothing else could be felt or seen, and my husband's PSA level was only 5.5, we thought we were okay.

June 7th-The diagnosis: My husband had already left for work and I was doing my homework online. The phone rang and it was his doctor. I wasn't expecting anything because it was after 5pm. The doctor said that he could tell me the results because I was on Jim's list of people he could talk to. Casually, the doctor said the results came back and Jim has cancer. I said, "Oh, okay." The doctor started rattling off a date of when Jim needed to be seen again. I stopped him and told him that I needed to call Jim. The doctor gave me his cell phone number and said to have Jim call him. At that very moment, my world went spinning out of control. I have never had a physical reaction to anything that was ever told to me until that day. I immediately called my husband, only to get his voice mail!!! He works in a factory, so sometimes he cannot hear his phone. I called three more times in between throwing up in the bathroom. By the time he called, I couldn't hardly speak any more. How do I tell my husband of less than a year, that he has cancer? I finally got it out, and his response was, "I knew it." So casual. Then he started calling his family and then they started calling me. For about 45 minutes, I could not stop crying and dry heaving. Finally, my husband called me and said that he was coming home from work and his brother and his family came over to be with us.

This was the worst day of our lives.
